A GOOD FIRE was blazing on the hearth when Helen returned to her room. Mrs. Draper must’ve come kindled it while she was out. A flame sparked and flared upward when Helen drew near to warm her hands. A peculiar green flame caught her attention. Small and intense, it turned blue as she watched and then became green again. The fuel must have a chemistry to produce such a rainbow of colors, Helen mused without interest.

She opened the wardrobe to select a day dress. Weathersky Endicott had consumed her thoughts. It was difficult to concentrate on anything else.

There were two new frocks to choose from—ordered by Clytemnestra, no doubt, in advance of the wedding. Helen suspected the purchases were an attempt to bribe her and she couldn’t help exclaiming over the elegance and flattering cut of the garments. They were truly the prettiest dresses she had ever seen. Helen despairingly fingered the expensive fabric. What a pity that she would not be seen in them except by the members of Cragmoore Castle.

She changed out of her wet and muddy clothes and washed the dirt from her face in the basin. Her hair was in disarray, as usual, and after a moment or two of struggle, she gave up the enterprise. A ribbon to tie the bulk of it off her face would do well enough for now.

Helen glanced over the dressing table for the moonstone. It was not there. She frowned as she opened the jewellery box and pawed through its meager contents looking for it.

Not there. Most odd. Helen bit her lip, wondering where she might have put it. The night table offered no clue.

“Oh dear, and I faithfully promised Weathersky I would wear it.”

She calculated the odds of trouble arising in the distance between her room and the library and decided it was worth the risk. The library, as Weathersky had said, was protected by some sort of spell. She would be completely safe once she reached its doors and what harm could she come to in getting to it? Aside from the staircase, there was no obstacle. She would grip the banister to avoid tripping.

Surely it was safe to leave her room without the moonstone. Regardless, there was no alternative, for the amulet was nowhere to be found and Weathersky was expecting her in the library—where they would be alone, she recalled suddenly.

Her pulse raced.

Helen caught sight of her reflection in the mirror and was arrested by the girl looking back at her. Her eyes were gleaming with a new life. Excited, frightened and consumed—yes, it must be said—Helen was consumed by eagerness to be alone with him again.

As she left her room, the fire flared alive again with that strange blue-green fire and Helen forgot—or chose not to remember—Weathersky’s warning about needing protection from him.
